The accidental expat blogger behind Rock Petal Valley

Hello, I am Jonas
I am a project manager, a parent, and an expat living in Berlin, Germany.
A few years ago, I moved here with my family. What began as a temporary assignment gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Started
Moving to Germany wasn't part of the long-term plan. Like many expat moves, it began as a work opportunity and quickly became something much bigger.
The initial months were challenging — unfamiliar systems, routines, and expectations. Daily tasks seemed more tangled than they needed to be.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, ambiguity, and plenty of hands-on learning. Yet gradually routines took shape. We found spots that suited us, connected with other families, and began creating something that felt steady.
Why I Built Rock Petal Valley
Much of what’s online was either corporate relocation guidance or superficial travel content. What was lacking was an honest, everyday family viewpoint.
This site aims to bridge that gap — practical advice drawn from real-life experience in Germany.
What This Site Is (And Isn't)
This site is:
- Hands-on experience from living in Germany
- Centered on family life and everyday realities
- Updated when there are real changes
This site isn't:
- A tourism authority resource
- Sponsored review platform
- A generic travel blog
Looking Forward
Our time in Germany continues, and so does the learning journey. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll keep documenting what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in Berlin or anywhere in Germany, don't hesitate to reach out.
Cheers,
Jonas
